    Course Summary

The University of Gloucestershire’s MSc degree program in Cyber Security is an excellent next step from an undergraduate degree in computing or IT, or as a ‘career kick starter’ for those who have been working in the field for years, but need a Master’s level degree to improve their promotion potential.

You’ll learn everything you need to know to become a specialist in computer and IT security, but perhaps more importantly you’ll learn a wide range of leadership skills and the specific techniques you’ll need to lead, manager or otherwise oversee a team or department of IT professionals.

You’ll study all aspects of cyber security, including everything form general concepts in information security to highly detailed, specialist modules in network, computer and communications security techniques. This will include specific sessions on the demands of the GDPR and ways to make sure an organisation remains GDPR compliant whilst meeting customer and shareholder expectations.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This degree program is typically delivered over a single year at full time.

    Modules Include:

    • Secure System Architecture
    • Research Methods for Computing
    • Network Security
    • Information Security Management
    • Human Factors in Cyber Security
    • Digital Forensics
    • Database Management
    • Cyber Security Principles

There is also a dissertation requirement. This will be worth a full 60 credits, and will include a ‘sustained and intensive’ investigation into an area that is of special interest to you and to your intended career pathway. That research project and the related writing must demonstrate both your deep understanding of the field as well as demonstrating your mastery of the cognitive and practical skills you’ve learned throughout the degree program.

It must be both critical and evaluative in nature, and acknowledge existing cutting edge research in the field. It should make proper use of appropriate methodologies as well as give evidence that the research and the conclusions reached from it are unambiguous.

    Learning & Teaching

The University of Gloucestershire’s MSc in International Business is primarily delivered through the modules listed above. Each of these, in turn, includes teaching methods appropriate to the subject matter. You will learn in lectures and guest lectures and in smaller, more interactive seminars. You’ll expand on that learning in small groups doing a range of coursework assignments, performing case study analysis and writing essays which demonstrate a mastery of the techniques presented.

    Career Possiblities

This degree is presented by the University of Gloucestershire’s School of Business and Technology, and is well respected on the local, national and international levels. As such, few students have difficulty finding a suitable role. In fact, some 95% of the university’s Business graduates are employed or enrolled in higher degree programs within 6 months of graduation. Many students have gone on to build successful careers as Chief Technical Officers, Cyber Security Consultants and Security Analysts.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 1 year MSc degree.

Applicants must typically have earned a 2:2 honours degree in a related subject or the international equivalent. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.0 overall with no section scoring less than 5.5 would qualify, for example.
