    Course Summary

The University of Leicester’s Biochemistry BSc program not only gives you a solid basis in the life sciences, it gives you a deep specialisation in Biochemistry – the molecular basis for life processes, and the root of many diseases. You’ll also learn how to analyse and assimilate large amounts of data, and to communicate them accurately.

The first year of this program shares a core curriculum with Leicester’s six other Biological Sciences BSc degrees. That means it is very easy to transfer between the Genetics, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Zoology and Physiology with Pharmacology programs before beginning year 2, or to de-specialise entirely for a general degree in the Biological Sciences.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    • From Individuals to Populations: An Introduction to Genetics
    • Biodiversity and Behaviour: An Introduction to Zoology

    Year 2:

In addition to your core modules, you’ll be able to choose 4 modules from among 2 lists of options. This will let you begin to specialise your studies even further.

    Core Modules:

    • Research Topic
    • Protein Control in Cellular Regulation
    • Molecular Cell Biology
    • Biochemistry of Nucleic Acids

Year 3 (Placement or Study Abroad):

In your third year, you will have the opportunity to apply for a paid placement position or to study abroad at one of Leicester’s partner institutions.

A year in industry will give you important real world laboratory and field skills as well as specialty experience. A year abroad will give you an international perspective and help you distinguish yourself from other Biological Science graduates.

    Year 4:

This year will feature four core modules, as well as three optional modules which will put the finishing touches on your fields of special expertise. You will also deliver a research project that is closely tied to one of your optional modules.

    Core Modules:

    • Protein Complexes: from Cells to Molecules
    • Gene Expression: Molecular Basis and Medical Relevance
    • Contemporary Issues in Biochemistry
    • Cancer Cell and Molecular Biology

    Learning & Teaching

The University of Leicester’s BSc programs all rely on a mix of classic techniques such as lecture classes, individual and group projects and seminars. As a Biochemistry degree, though, this program also involves a great deal of laboratory and field work.

    Career Possiblities

Leicester’s BSc in Biochemistry includes the option of a year in external placement as well as internal research placements over the summer, and a variety of summer careers events. With the support of the Career Development Service, you should have no difficulty gaining a rewarding post in the chemical industry, in a doctoral program or as a researcher.

    Entry Credit

Entry Requirements for UK and EU-nationals

Leicester’s Biochemistry program typically requires applicants to have earned 3 A Levels at ABB or higher. 2 AS Levels can be counted as a single A Level. A Levels must include 2 sciences or maths, with a strong preference for Biology.

Entry Requirements for overseas (non-EU) students

International students must be fluent in written and spoken English. This can be demonstrated by an IELTS score of 6.5 or better overall.

International students must also have academic accreditation equivalent to that required for UK and EU students. The requirements can be found here.
