    Course Summary

Liverpool University’s Masters of Biological Science degree program is perfect for those students who want to develop the skills they need for a career in medical or biological research.

This program in an integrated degree, which means it is essentially ‘bolted on’ to one of the university’s BSc degrees, as outlined below. It is quite possible to upgrade any of these degree programs to an MBiolSci degree by taking the fourth year of this program after finishing any applicable 3 year BSc program.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    • Zoology
    • Tropical Disease Biology
    • Pharmacology
    • Microbiology
    • Human Physiology
    • Genetics
    • Bioveterinary Science
    • Biological Sciences
    • Biological and Medical Sciences
    • Biochemistry
    • Anatomy and Human Biology

    Year 4:

As you enter the Masters level portion of this program you’ll have only 2 core modules. These will consist of Research Methods and Applications in Biological Sciences and a choice between either Informatics for Life Sciences or Advanced Statistics for Biologists.

However, you will have 30 credits worth of elective modules which you can use to further specialise your educational path. These may be selected from the following list:

    • Post-genome bioinformatics
    • Evolution and behaviour
    • Cell and molecular biology of cancer
    • Advanced topics in viral disease mechanisms
    • Advanced topics in molecular medicine
    • Advanced topics in microbial diversity and versatility
    • Advanced topics in comparative physiology
    • Advanced topics in cell signalling
    • Advanced topics in biotechnology
    • Advanced topics in animal behaviour

Note that, with special arrangements, it may be possible to apply electives not on this list to your degree.

    Learning & Teaching

Liverpool University’s Biological Science programs are all heavily research-led. The modules are taught in a student-focused manner, including not just the traditional lectures and seminars but also a wide range of computer-based workshops, dissections, and laboratory practicals. There may also be a great deal of field-work, depending on your chosen degree pathway.

    Career Possiblities

This program is perfect for students with their hearts set on a higher degree, such as the MPhil or PhD programs at Liverpool or a wide range of programs elsewhere. Other graduates go into the public sector, and still others prefer a commercial career in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, biotech or other industries. Still others go into teaching.

    Entry Credit

Entry Requirements for UK and EU-nationals

This program is essentially a capstone year for one of Liverpool’s 11 compatible BSc programs. As such, you would have to meet the requirements of your chosen pathway before you could be considered for the MBiolSci program. It is also possible to add this on after gaining entry into one of the 11 supported pathway programs.

These programs typically require applicants to have achieved 3 A Levels including Biology and one other science. Some require the second science to have been Chemistry.

Entry Requirements for overseas (non-EU) students

Overseas students must have achieved an equivalent level of academic accreditation to EU and UK students. A list of the overseas accreditations accepted can be found here.
