    Course Summary

Manchester’s Fashion Marketing BSc program focuses on the peculiarities of the way fashion and textiles are marketed compared to other goods and services. You will learn a great deal of general marketing theory, but there is also a heavy emphasis on the interaction of the commercial imperative with the challenges faced by the designers and creative teams behind the products.

This program is fully accredited by The Textile Institute. It is a BSc degree, and there is a substantial focus on the technology that makes modern garment production possible. Students will learn to create, manage and market fabrics and garments in a variety of global markets.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

    Year 1:

You will begin with a core curriculum which will teach you the fundamentals of textile science, the fashion business and the basic tenets of marketing generally.

You’ll take modules like Introduction to Management, Retail and Design Management, Introduction to Marketing and several textile science modules.

    Year 2:

This year sees you building on the skills and theory you developed in year 1. You’ll also explore fashion marketing in depth, with a heavy focus on marketing communications.

You’ll take part in a group project over year 2. This will seek to integrate your skills in the design, manufacture and marketing of a textile product.

    Placement Year (optional):

You may apply to spend your third year in an industrial placement or abroad. If so, you will return to take your 3rd year modules in the 4th year.

    Year 3/4:

During your last year in the program, you’ll select from among several advanced electives to better define your specialty. You might focus on computer aided design, a specific aspect of management, or something else entirely.

You have 2 options in year 3 as well. You may develop a final year project in line with your specialty, or you may elect to deliver a Business Project instead. This will see you starting a company and running it for a year.

    Learning & Teaching

Classes at the University of Manchester’s Fashion Marketing program rely on formal lecture classes, tutorial sessions and small seminars just like most programs. They also rely heavily on laboratory work, studio-based design classes and multimedia learning.

    Career Possiblities

Graduates of the University of Manchester’s Fashion Marketing BSc program have many options. Some will go directly into the marketing departments of fashion and textile businesses in the UK or around the world. Others will go into higher education, or apply their highly transferrable marketing skills to other roles entirely.

Accreditation by The Textile Institute is a huge help in finding your first role, but The University of Manchester’s reputation and industry links are even more important. These make it possible for the university to offer placement opportunities in companies such as Arcadia, Tommy Hilfiger, ASOS and Next. Such a placement gives you the experience and industry contacts you need to really thrive during the first few years of your career.
