The first part of the program is dedicated to agriculture as a science. You’ll study soil science, plant biology, and nutrition. You’ll also take your first steps into agribusiness, learning about management, law and accounting. Later in the program you’ll study the business side almost exclusively.

You will have the opportunity to experience many of the major software systems used to plan, control and optimise farms of all sizes in the industry today, with several demonstrations and practical workshops.

You can increase your employability dramatically by opting in to a placement year, where you will do paid work in an appropriate industrial or commercial role.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. Course Outline

This outline follows the three year plan, but this can be a 4 year program if you opt for placement.

    Stage 1:

Stage one focuses on quantitative methods and the science behind modern agriculture.

The first part of this program is the same for all of Newcastle’s agriculture programs. In fact, students can transfer between programs fairly easily up until the end of Stage 2.

    Stage 2:

The next stage deals with the practical aspects of farm management, with a focus on animal and crop production. This stage will include at least one ‘field’ course focused on crop pest management.

    Placement:

You have the option to spend either 9 months or a full year in paid work placement with one of several approved organisations. This is highly recommended, as it gives you real world working experience as well as important industry contacts.

    Stage 3:

Stage three depends on whether you choose to transfer to a different specialist program or stick with the Farm Business of the Agriculture BSc. Specialist degrees include Agronomy and Animal Production Science.
