    Course Summary

    The University of Southampton’s Accounting and Finance BSc program is a professionally accredited degree which teaches students how to interpret and prepare business information of a financial or accounting nature in a variety of contexts. It also ensures that you understand the finer points of finance and investment, corporate governance, financial reporting, auditing and taxation.

    This degree program differs from many others of its kind, as it includes a year of paid placement in one of Southampton’s partner organisations.     Course Outline

    This is a 4 year program for most students, including your year in placement. Each year will see you studying a number of compulsory core modules as well as electives which you will choose based on your interests and desired career path.

    Core Modules:

    These have been selected by the degree program designers in order to provide you with a solid grounding in the theory and practice of both financial accounting and business management. In later years, core modules will build on this base with more advanced modules in commercial law, financial markets, tax and auditing practice.

    Elective Modules:

    These allow you to broaden the scope of your education, or to narrow it down to a particular specialty.

    Placement Year:

    Your third year will be spent in an industry placement of 32-52 weeks. This will not only enhance your CV, it will give you a wonderful opportunity to develop your real world business and personal skills in a working environment.

    Dissertation:

    As a part of your final year, you will undertake a dissertation of a topic you choose, with the guidance of academic staff.

    Learning & Teaching

    Southampton’s business degrees all rely on a variety of learning and teaching methods. Depending on the module and the member of staff teaching it, you will experience one or more type of learning. These will include large lectures, computer learning sessions, or small seminar classes. Almost every module will require a substantial amount of individual study as well.

    Career Possiblities

    Many University of Southampton Accounting and Finance graduates find themselves fast-tracked for management in an accounting and / or finance position. Graduates have taken roles as Financial Controllers, Management Consultants, Management Accountants, Tax Specialists, Auditors and more.

    Entry Credit

    Entry Requirements for UK and EU-nationals

    Applicants for the University of Southampton’s Accounting and Finance  program must have achieved 3 A Levels at AAB or higher, or an equivalent qualification. General Studies A Levels will not be applicable.

    Entry Requirements for overseas (non-EU) students

    You must have equivalent academic achievements to those required for UK and EU students. The different qualifications accepted by Southampton can be found here.

    In addition you must be able to show that you are fluent in written and spoken English. An IELTS level of no less than 6.5 overall, and no less than 6.0 in any one component is accetable proof, but other proofs are accepted. For more details, see here.
