    Course Outline

    This is a 1 year program for most students, delivered across three terms. There are no required or compulsory modules. You can select your classes from a wide range of elective modules which appeal to your interests and career path, and which will prepare you for the dissertation you’ll deliver in Term 3.

    Terms 1 and 2:

    In your first term, you’ll have the option of attending an intensive, week-long course introducing the Common Law. This will be particularly helpful for students who have not studies Common Law, or are entering the program from non-common law countries.

    • Commercial Conflict of Laws and International Litigation
    • International Commercial Arbitration
    • Carriage by Air
    • Insurance Law
    • Principles of Secured Transactions
    • Corporate Governance – Regulating Boards of Directors
    • Global Trends in Copyright and Trademark Laws
    • The Law of Ship Sale and Purchase
    • Advanced Secured Transactions
    • Corporate Governance – Shareholders’ Rights and Responsibilities
    • Enforcement of Intellectual Property rights over the Internet
    • Ship Finance

    Term 3:

    In your third term, you will choose a topic and deliver a dissertation. This should be in line with your interests as well as your ultimate career goals. You will be assigned a supervisor form the academic staff who has expertise in the field you select. They will support you in selecting a thesis, researching it and writing your findings in a professional manner.

    Learning & Teaching

    Southampton’s International Business Law LLM program relies small group teaching and seminar classes almost exclusively. You will also be assigned various presentations and will participate in small moot courts to reinforce your analysis and persuasiveness skills. These methods will help instil transferrable sills such as logical reasoning, critical thinking and communication, and will serve you in a great many ways.

    Career Possiblities

    Entry Credit

    Entry Requirements for UK and EU-nationals

    Applicants for the University of Southampton’s International Business Law LLM program must have achieved at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree. This should be in law, or at east have a major law component.  

    Entry Requirements for overseas (non-EU) students

    You must have equivalent academic achievements to those required for UK and EU students. The different qualifications accepted by Southampton can be found here.

    In addition you must be able to show that you are fluent in written and spoken English. An IELTS level of no less than 7.0 overall and no less than 6.0 in any component is accetable proof, but other proofs are accepted. For more details, see here.
