    Course Summary

The University of St Andrews’ Management Science (Honours) BSc program is a 4 year course of study delivered by St Andrews’ School of Management. Students will learn about how organisations function within a larger society, and what managers of these organisations are responsible for maintaining. You will also study the advanced mathematics and related disciplines you need to make proper use of this managerial insight in a modern organisation.

In addition, you will be able to direct your own learning journey by developing a narrow specialty. This might be, for example, Advanced Data Analysis, Statistical Modelling, Consumer Behaviour, International Banking, Scenario Thinking or a wider range of other options.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

St Andrews’ Management Science BSc is a four year program for most students. Your first 2 ‘sub-honours’ years will give you the tools and techniques you need to tackle your higher, honours level courses.

    Year 1:

You will study the following modules in your first year:

    • Mathematics – the ideas, methods and techniques you will need to apply high level business skills
    • Organisations and Analysis – the analytical techniques and financial accounting tools managers need to operate effectively
    • Organisations and Society – Understanding economic principles as well as the people, the organisations and the business environment they all operate within

    Year 2:

In your second year, you will build on year one modules with:

    • Mathematics – applying integral and differential calculus, linear mathematics and limiting processes
    • Management and Analysis – new perspectives on management, policies and the shifting business environment
    • Management and Society – marketing principles, organisational behaviour and conceptual frameworks

    Year 3:

Year 3 will see you study your choice of a wide range of honours modules, required and elective. These will include:

    • Contemporary Issues in Management
    • Corporate Finance and Control
    • Financial Markets and Investments
    • Leadership Development
    • Mathematical Programming
    • Organisation Studies
    • Scenario Thinking
    • Time Series Analysis

    Year 4:

In your last year, you also may choose to deliver an independent research project and to submit a dissertation which could become an invaluable tool to gaining your first positions in your chosen field or industry.

    Learning & Teaching

In addition to standard lectures, you may learn from postgraduate students teaching smaller tutorials under the supervision of university staff. Learning methods include exam preparation, preparing assignments, delivering presentations, undertaking group or individual research, and project work. There will of course be lecture and seminar classes, and you have the option of delivering a detailed dissertation at the end of the program.
