    Course Summary

    The University of Sunderland’s MSc in Business Technology Management was created to give students not just the leadership and management techniques they’ll need to rise to a responsible role in a business environment, but also the deep understanding of Cybersecurity, Statistical and Data Science, Machine Learning and Data Analytics that they’ll need to manage and set policy for an IT department or an entire organisation’s data management functions.

    This is a highly respected business department, whose research has been ranked as ‘world leading’ by the most recent Teaching Excellence Framework. It is a member of the Association of Business Schools and has been ranked in 3rd place overall in the UK Engagement Survey for 2018. They ranked 4th place for Assessment and 2nd in all of the UK for Retention and Progression. In addition, their Computer Science and Informatics research has been rated ‘Internationally Excellent’ by the Research Excellence Framework.

    Course Outline

    This degree program is typically delivered over a single year at full time.

    Modules Include:

    • Data Science Fundamentals

    This 30 credit module teaches you different ways to use data, as well as ways to fuse datasets into more complex assets. You’ll also explore Big Data and other analytics techniques.

    • Fundamentals of Cybersecurity

    Here you’ll explore aspects of risk assessment, governance and management. It will allow you to create valid cybersecurity solutions for a range of different organisation types.

    • Technology Management in Organisations

    This module looks at using data science and cyber security principles to set effective data policy. It also covers standard cybersecurity tools.

    • Machine learning and Data Analytics

     You’ll study data mining, machine learning and data analytics from the ethical, legal and social perspectives. You’ll become familiar with both the uses and issues of analytics in a business context.

    • Master’s Project

    You’ll develop a project for a sponsor in industry. This involves both research and a deliverable component.

    Learning & Teaching

    The University of Sunderland relies on a wide range of different learning and teaching methods to deliver its degree programs. You’ll engage in a great deal of self-directed study and reading, practical exercises (learning by doing), and reflective learning. You’ll make use of the university’s state of the art computer laboratories and the assistance of staff to deliver your capstone project, which must solve a real world technology management problem.

    Career Possiblities

    This degree program will prepare you for a fast track role to leading a computer science unit or founding a business technology management consultancy. Because of your in-depth knowledge of cyber security and data science, you’ll also be well qualified to become an IT Systems Manager, an IT Security Manager, a Data Manager, a Data Scientist or a Data Analyst. You might also go on to get your PhD or another research based degree.

    Entry Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 1 year MSc degree.

    Applicants must typically have earned a 2nd class honours degree in a related field or the international equivalent. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.0 overall and with no section scoring less than 5.5 would qualify, for example.
