    Course Summary

The University of Sunderland’s MBChB degree in Medicine is a unique program which offers a curriculum which is highly integrated with the Keele School of Medicine. It is, of course, a qualifying medical degree. You will learn in some of the UK’s finest Hospital Trusts and several of the university’s 63 GP practice partners as well as in the classroom. Once you complete the 5 year program, you’ll be in a position to seek your Foundation Year 1 training as a doctor.

You’ll learn quite a lot over 5 years, and the program is designed to ensure that you meet all of the knowledge, skill and professional standards required of a new doctor. Part of that will include preparation to work in modern, interdisciplinary medical teams, so you’ll train side by side with physiological scientists, sport medicine specialists, biomedical professionals, paramedics, nurses and pharmacists n many of your classes and placements.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning & Teaching

The University of Sunderland’s new medical programs strive to be exceedingly ‘clinically realistic’. Not only will you learn in standard lecture and seminar settings but also in the purpose built Anatomy Lab. You’ll engage in problem-based learning and a wide range of real world clinical placements. Your progress will be assessed through your written work, written examinations, practical examinations and your own reflective writings. You’ll receive feedback regularly, through one on one sessions with a tutor.

    Career Possiblities

There are quite a few career paths open to you with an MBChB degree. You’ll have a solid basis in the social and physical sciences as well as a deep understanding of many aspects of Medicine. You’ll have experience – real world clinical experience – in several NHS hospital trust settings, smaller private practices and even 3rd sector (not for profit) and community settings. Many students will of course seek out Foundation Year One training after graduation.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 5 year MBChB degree.

Applicants must typically have earned 3 A levels at AAA including Biology and Chemistry, or the international equivalent. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. A good IELTS score would qualify, for example.
