    Course Summary

    This course is an excellent way to improve your understanding of modern finance, from both a practical and theoretical perspective. You’ll gain a great deal of insight into how bans operate, especially in terms of regulation and risk management. You’ll learn to appraise and apply investment strategies, risk management models and bank operations policies.

    The teachers and professors of the University of Sussex’s Banking and Finance BSc program are a mix of traditional academics and current and past practitioners who have personal experience working in and indeed running successful banking and financial institutions of all sizes.

    Course Outline

    This course can be taken as a 1 year, full time course or over 2 years at part time. Part time classes allow many students to continue in their work or to keep up with family or other commitments whilst studying. The outline below assumes full-time attendance.

    Terms 1 and 2:

    Your first 2 terms will be devoted to studying both the core modules that are the foundation of this degree program and several elective modules. The core modules include:

    • Bank Financial Management
    • Accounting for Decision Makers

    • Financial and Time Series Econometrics
    • Corporate Governance
    • Commodity and Energy Markets

    Summer Term:

    The summer term will be devoted to an independent research project and dissertation. Program staff will help you choose your topic, and support you throughout the term.

    Learning & Teaching

    This is a university degree, and the teaching methods vary from what you may be used to. Classes will include large lectures, small group seminars and tutorials, practical workshops and collaborative projects. There will be a very strong focus on independent study, and on developing your ability to identify, analyse and solve problems independently.

    Career Possiblities

    This is an excellent start to a career in finance or banking. It is a highly respected MSc program, and will help you develop the technical, analytical and managerial skills you will need to find a rewarding place in either the public or private sectors.

    Graduates of the University of Sussex’s Department of Business and Management often go on to roles involving multinational banking, fund management, auditing or regulation, or in central banks such as the FED, the ECB or the Bank of England.

    Entry Credit

    Entry Requirements for UK and EU-nationals

    The University of Sussex’s Banking and Finance MSc degree requires you to have already received a 2:2 honours degree (or better0 at the undergraduate level to apply. Your average marks should be 57% or better.  

    Entry Requirements for overseas (non-EU) students

    International students must be fluent in written and Spoken English. That can be evidenced with an IELTS (academic) score of 6.5 overall, with no component scoring less than 6.0.
