    Course Summary

This course is ideal for many students who intend to practice law after graduation. It will of course provide a firm background in the principles and professional practice of English law. In addition, a Law LLB degree from the University of Sussex will make it possible for you to build a specialty in overseas law, with Canadian, European or International law more generally as your chosen field.

The Sussex Law Clinic gives you the chance to deal with actual clients, and to practice law (under close supervision). This is a wonderful opportunity to gain real world experience in advocacy and litigation, and can contribute substantially to your future career.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This is a three year program.

    Year 1:

In your first year you will primarily study core modules that explore England’s legal system, the concepts of constitutional and administrative law, the law of tort and the law of contract, as well as the overall framework of justice and equality in society. You will also be able to select from a few optional modules.

    Year 2:

Your second year in the University of Sussex’s Law LLB program will focus on criminal law, land law and the law of equity and trusts. You will also study the policies and laws of the EU.

    Year 3:

In your third year, you will have completed your core legal education, and as a result you will have an extremely free hand in choosing the optional modules which most appeal to you.

    Study Abroad/Placement:

These are optional, but excellent opportunities to build up both your international law expertise and your real world experience in practice.

    Learning & Teaching

You will experience a wide range of learning and teaching styles over the course of this program, especially if you opt to study abroad. Most modules will involve a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials and group work. There will also be a great deal of independent study. The exact methods chosen will vary dramatically from module to module, especially if you work with the University’s Law Clinic.

    Career Possiblities

The majority of graduates from the University of Sussex’s Law LLB program will go on to practice law, either as solicitors, barristers, paralegals, case handlers, or in executive officer roles.

However, you will garner a wide range of transferrable skills, and like many graduates, you may find yourself drawn to a career in the media, public relations, human resources or policy development.
