    This is a 3 year program, with an additional placement year. Alternatively, it can be taken as a 4 year program, granting an MEng degree or as a 5 year program with both a placement year and an MEng degree award.

    Course Outline

    Year 1:

    In your first year of the University of Sussex’s BEng program will see you taking the core modules which will give you the specialised mathematics, programming and materials-based knowledge you’ll need to thrive in engineering.

    You’ll also participate in the Global Design Challenge, a week-long team-based project.

    Year 2:

    Your second year in the program will cover more advanced core concepts, including fluid mechanics, CAD and modelling, systems analysis and more maths.

    Year 3:

    In your third year, you will take the last of your core modules, but more importantly you’ll be able to take the advanced elective modules which will help to define your future career.

    Placement (optional):

    An industrial placement will give you not just important experience and industry contacts, it comes with a paycheck. Recent students have taken placements at such well-known organisations as YASA Motors, GE Aviation and EDF Energy.

    Learning & Teaching

    As a BEng is a highly technical degree, you will spend a great deal of time in a practical or laboratory setting, learning the skills that you will depend upon in your later career. You will also experience a wide range of academic learning and teaching styles. Most modules will involve a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials and group work.

    Lastly, the year of professional placement will be an incredibly important learning experience for you, as well as a source of the industry contacts that can help make your career a real success.

This degree and others like it are designed with these organisations in mind, to ensure your employability in the automotive, construction, manufacturing, energy or aerospace industries, among others.

    Many graduates of the University of Sussex’s Mechanical Engineering BEng program have become graduate mechanical engineers, design engineers and aviation analysts in recent years.

    Entry Credit

    Entry Requirements for UK and EU-nationals

    The University of Sussex’s Mechanical Engineering BEng (hons) program requires applicants to have achieved 3 A Levels, at BBB or better. Applicants must also show that they have a high level of academic ability in mathematics.

    Entry Requirements for overseas (non-EU) students

    International students must be fluent in written and Spoken English. That can be evidenced with an IELTS (academic) score of 6.5 overall, with no component scoring less than 6.0.

    They must also have undergraduate accreditation equivalent to that required for UK and EU students. For example, an International Baccalaureate Diploma with at least 30-32 points will qualify.
