    Course Summary

    The University of Winchester’s BA in Sport Management will give you a deep, nuanced understanding of the way the sports industry works as well as how it is run from a business and marketing standpoint. It will demystify sponsorship and sports branding, and focuses strongly on employability. It will give you access to an industry which employs some 450,000 people in the UK alone, and speaks for some £20 billion of the national economy.

    The program is divided into 4 unique strands, each delivered by a different faculty of specialists. The Management, Marketing and Events strand for example is delivered largely by the Winchester Business School. The Research Methods strand is focused on the qualitative and quantitative research methods you’ll need in this field. The Sports Studies strand focuses more on the impact and interactions sport has on society. The Sports Marketing strand, however, seeks to model sport and sporting teams as businesses.

    Course Outline

    This degree program is typically delivered over 3 years at full time, up to six years if taken at part time.  

    Your first year will focus in delivering a background understanding of the industry and its various UK and global markets. Year 2 will address specific business skills within the sport industry, as well as giving you access to optional modules. Your final year will include an in-depth dissertation based on a topic which matches your interest sand intended career pathway.

    Learning & Teaching

    You’ll be taught via large lectures and smaller, more interactive seminars where you’ll be encouraged to discuss what you’ve learned in lecture within a group of your peers. You’ll develop your critical thinking and independent learning skills as you advance your expertise in the subject.

    Year one will feature around 324 hours of teaching, learning and assessment, as well as approximately 876 hours of independent learning. Year 2 is 312 hours and 888 hours, respectively, and your final year is 276 hours and 924 hours.

    Career Possiblities

    Recent graduates of Winchester’s Sport Management degree program are now working with national rugby unions, Championship and Premier league football teams and more. This degree is designed specifically to improve your employability within the Sport Management sector. You’ll also gain a general understanding of this rapidly growing industry and a wide range of generally useful skills. As a result, some 94% of graduates have historically found satisfactory employment or entered into higher degree programs within 6 months of successful completion.

    Entry Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 3 year BA degree.

    Applicants must typically have earned a C/4 in their Maths and English GCSEs, or the international equivalent. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.0 overall with no section scoring less than 5.5 would qualify, for example.
