    Course Summary

The University of Aberdeen’s Financial Economics degree program gives its graduates access to a deep understanding of economics and financial systems all around the world. In addition to the theories and tools of economics, you’ll learn to apply them by analysing a host of real world situations using industry standard quantitative techniques.

You’ll study both micro and macroeconomics as well as the entire core curriculum of the joint degree in years one and 2, but branching off into highly specialised financial training in the latter years of the program. You’ll also have access to the Dissertation in Financial Economics module.

There are many specialties possible, but the program offers a few well-researched ‘pathways’, including Macroeconomics, Policy and Finance, Financial Investment and the unique, interdisciplinary Behavioural and Experimental Finance. This last route is heavily influenced by the 2017 Nobel Prize winning research of Professor Richard Thaler.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.
