    Course Summary

    The University of Aberdeen’s Medical Sciences MRes is a laboratory-heavy, research-led degree program ordered around an individual research project. It will give you extensive medical research experience in a laboratory setting, under the guidance of world-leading molecular bioscience researches in the Rowlett Institute or the Institute of Medical Sciences.

    The first semester of this program is sees you taking only 2 core modules, as well as several electives. In semester two there is only one core module. You will also begin your Extended Research Project. The final semester will be dedicated to completing and presenting your Extended Research Project.

    Course Outline

    This course is typically delivered over 1 year of 3 semesters.

    The Core modules you’ll take include:

    • Shaping a Research Question (5 credits)

    This is a very short module designed to support your research project. It will link you with a project supervisor and see you deciding on a topic for your Extended Research Project.

    • Study Skills for Life

    This module will give you both research skills you’ll need for your Extended Research project and transferrable skills in Time Management, Note Taking, Presentation, Writing, Academic Integrity, Appraisal, Numeracy and IT.

    • Beyond Your Degree

    This module helps you prepare to advance your medical or academic career beyond this degree program. You’ll explore the university’s Careers Service, learn to write CVs and Cover Letters, and develop your interview skills

    • Extended Research Project in Medical Sciences (120 Credits)

    You will research and present an extended project in accordance with your interests and specialties, with the guidance and assistance of academic staff.

    Learning & Teaching

    The University of Aberdeen’s MREs program is heavily research oriented, with special emphasis placed on actual laboratory studies. In addition to the standard learning methods of seminars, tutorials and workshops, you’ll complete lab work, an individual research project and explore peer learning.

    The academic, practical and analytic skills you learn in the University of Aberdeen’s Medical Sciences MRes program could see you taking a place in many different careers, but a large proportion of graduates go on to successful careers in medical research.     Entry Credit

    Entry Requirements for UK and EU-nationals

    The University of Aberdeen’s Medical Sciences MRes program requires applicants to have earned an upper second class (2:1) undergraduate degree in a subject related to the medical or biomedical sciences, or a close equivalent.  

    Entry Requirements for overseas (non-EU) students                         

    International students must be fluent in written and spoken English. This can be demonstrated by an IELTS score of 6.5 or better overall, with no less than 6.0 in Reading and Writing, and no less than 5.5 in any other sections.

    International students must also have academic accreditation equivalent to that required for UK and EU students. This includes many degrees from non-UK universities, outlined here.
