    Course Summary

The life sciences have been described as among the most fascinating avenues of science, and it is not difficult to see why. Whether your passion is exploring all the incredible forms life can take, understanding the processes of life, death and illness on the biochemical level or cataloguing and preserving biodiversity in the face of climate change and an age of mass extinction, the University of Alberta’s MSc in the Biological Sciences is a great choice.

Your MSc program will truly be your own, as it will be individually tailored to your interests, research goals and ideal career pathway.

As an MA student, you’ll be closely associated with one or more of the department’s six separate Research Interest groups:

    • Ecology
    • Microbiology and Biotechnology
    • Molecular Biology and Genetics
    • Physiology and Cell Biology
    • Plant Biology
    • Systematics and Evolution

These groups are not rigid or distinct, and in fact they share many members between them.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.
