    Course Summary

Embarking on a course of study in the Biological Sciences at the University of Birmingham means learning about the organisms that surround us all – the plants, animals, fungi and microbes that make up the living world. The programme is fully accredited by the Royal Society of Biology as providing a solid foundation in the biological sciences and the key skills employers in the agricultural, medical and conservation industries demand from new employees.

Over the course of your studies, you will decide whether to study the biological sciences broadly, or to specialise in either zoology or genetics. No matter which path you choose, you’ll benefit form truly world class facilities and access to some of the most celebrated minds in the field.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

    Year 1:

This is a modular program of study, and the first year focuses on giving you a broad but comprehensive background in the life sciences generally. First year modules also include the ‘Widening Horizons’ module, which encourages you to include content from the University more generally, to enrich your learning experience.

    Year 2:

When you begin year 2 in the Biological sciences program, you’ll begin to select modules which correspond to your chosen course, either as a specialist or a generalist. Of course, there will also be core modules that are required for every 2nd year student, regardless of their chosen study path.

    Year 3:

Your last year in the Biological Sciences program includes both the standard modules you will have become used to and several opportunities for independent study. Both independent study and module work will be based around some of the exciting research currently being done at the University.

A full 1/3 of your credits for the final year will be gained from your Research Project, which will be accomplished as part of one of the University’s many research groups. It will be appropriate to your chosen path, and may involve either laboratory or field work, or a mix of the two.

    Learning & Teaching

The University of Birmingham is dedicated to providing highly personalised educational experience, and aims to provide at least 15 hours of contact time each week during term time.

This contact time consists of lectures, laboratory practice and various seminars. Full professors and lecturers teach the classes and modules, whilst doctoral researchers act as demonstrators in the practical lab sessions. All are supported by the Canvas e-learning program.

    Career Possiblities

The sky is the limit for graduates of the University of Birmingham’s biological sciences program. The pharmaceutical, biotech and personalised medicine industries are all growing rapidly in the region, and institutions focused on climate change and environmental remediation also snatch up many graduates every year.

Alternatively, many graduates go on to study for a Master’s Degree or a full PhD before launching their careers. This is doubly attractive, as post-graduate students at this University receive a stipend that is the equivalent of a generous salary.

One of the A Levels must be in Biology or Human Biology, and at least one of the others must be in a science – either Chemistry, Mathematics (Incl. further mathematics and statistics), Geology, Geography, Physics or Psychology.
