    Course Summary

The University of Birmingham has long been a leader in the field of computer science, so it is no surprise that its Masters/MSc program is among the UK’s most respected and longest running. This is a program for masters-level study for students who have their first (Bachelors level) degree in a field other than computing.

Receiving your Masters or MSc from U Birmingham will give you a firm foundation in computer science and software development, and opens up new career vistas in the information technology field. Students come to this program with a wide range of first degrees, but all leave with highly marketable skills and expertise.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This is a technical degree, but one with a hefty computer programming component. All students receive the same basic grounding in software development and computer science, but each is able to specialize their educational experience with later modules.

Key aspects of this course include:

    • Software workshop, comprising 2 terms of java programming, lectures and small group work
    • Multiple required modules
    • Your choice of optional modules
    • A 4-month summer project involving developing a large software system

    Learning & Teaching

This course is taught in three primary sections, each with a different focus.

The software workshop is assessed not only on the final examination but also a team project and your performance during multiple practical sessions.

Each taught module is different, but most will be assessed based on a practical assessment, a written examination, or a mixture of both.

Your summer project will be assessed based both on your written report and on a practical demonstration that you will conduct.

    Career Possiblities

Because of this programs very nature, it attracts students at all levels of ability, many of whom have already made progress in their chosen career paths. It is no surprise, then, that graduates find career options is both the public and private sectors, and in more industries than could be listed here.

Those who are taking this program directly after their first degree often use it to enhance their career marketability or to set the stage for their own start-up or first company.

No matter what career path you have envisioned, you have the full support of the University’s career programs throughout your education and the help of the University Careers Network thereafter.

    Entry Credit

Entry Requirements for UK and EU-nationals

Any student with a 2:2 Honours degree in a field other than computing may apply. However, the student should be able to demonstrate competency in mathematics as well as in a variety of scientific subjects. This could include ‘advanced high school level’ accomplishments, which would be required to understand the basics of computer science.

Entry Requirements for overseas (non-EU) students

International students must be fluent in written and Spoken English. In addition, they will have to demonstrate a similar level of understanding of mathematics and science-based subjects as is required for UK and EU students. More details of the University of Birmingham’s requirements for international students can be found here.
