    Course Summary

The University of Bradford offers a world renowned MSc in Cancer drug Discovery. As our understanding of molecular biology and molecular pathology grows, pharmacologists and medicinal chemists are making incredible inroads to treating or even curing many cancers. The discipline of Drug Discovery combines a deep understanding of disease diagnosis and treatment on the molecular level with specific expertise on the identification and optimisation of potential new medicines.

This MSc degree program is presented by Bradford’s Institute of Cancer Therapeutics. It is designed for employability, conveying exactly the skills and techniques which the pharmaceutical industry demands from graduates. You’ll study parallel synthesis techniques as well as computer-aided drug design and electronic data management skills.

This is a short, intensive course, covering the length and breadth of this exciting, challenging field in only three semesters. The specifics of your educational journey are yours to decide, by selecting the most appropriate elective modules.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This is a 1 year, full time program for most students.

    The core modules include:

    • Principles of Drug Discovery

This module will convey the methods, techniques and strategies of selecting and evaluating molecules as potential drugs, as well as  the ability to analyse the process critically.

    • Practical Skills in Pharmacology Research

Here you’ll learn advanced pharmacology techniques as well as improved research and communication skills.

    • Critical Appraisal of a Current Topic in Oncology and Toxicology

Here you’ll plan, undertake and report a detailed analysis of a relevant topic of your choice.

    • Case Studies in Drug Discovery

This module will give you a braod-based understanding of current issues in cancer drug discovery.

    • Cancer Therapeutics Research Project

Here you’ll work as part of a research team on a real drug discovery project.

    Typical optional modules include:

    • Toxicology and Safety Pharmacology
    • Molecular Basis of Cancer and Cancer Therapy
    • Preclinical Models for Drug Evaluation
    • Chemical Toolbox for Drug Discovery
    • Molecular Mechanisms of Toxicity

    Learning & Teaching

This will be a very ‘hands on’ degree program which aims to convey cutting edge practical and laboratory skills as much as it will give you a theoretical and critical appreciation of all aspects of cancer drug discovery. Modules will detail the process of computer-aided drug design and cutting edge drug synthesis techniques. Perhaps most importantly, though, it will give you the chance to research a topic in the field intensely, and to apply your new expertise in the real world.

    Career Possiblitie

Many graduates of the University of Bradford’s Cancer Drug Discovery MSc program go on to take research degrees, such as one of Bradford’s many PhD programs. Many instead choose to take advanced study at Glasgow, Newcastle or Dundee. Others of course go directly into careers in commercial medical research or at high level posts in the pharmaceutical industry. Some choose a slightly different route, going into clinical research roles in the public sector.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 1 year MSc degree.

Applicants must typically have achieved a 2:2 or better Bachelor’s degree in the chemical or biological sciences or the international equivalent. Beyond that, certain other qualifications are accepted.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.0 or better would qualify, for example.
