    Course Summary

The University of Bristol’s Advanced Computing program is an MSc. It is designed for new students who have already achieved a degree in either computer science or in a field which is very closely related. Such students will already understand the basics of the theory behind computing and a grounding in how they are applied. This course will then allow them to specialise, and to prepare for either a higher level qualification such as a PhD or to forge a lucrative career ether in industry or as a researcher.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

    Taught Units:

There are a wide variety of taught units available to new students from day 1. You may select nearly any combination of available units, with the consultation and consent of the program director. This allows you to shape your own educational journey, and to pave the way towards your ultimate specialisation nearly any way you see fit.

Common specialisations have included robotics and AI systems, high performance computational systems and a variety of ‘creative’ technological applications. However, you are encouraged to create your own end goal.

    Project Work:

In addition to the taught units, you will do a substantial amount of project work every year. These will involve research, planning and implementation of something relevant to your skills and chosen specialty. Each project must include a substantial technical or scientific component, typically involving software development.

    Learning & Teaching

The University of Bristol’s MSc in Advanced Computing is a mixture of classes and project work. Every project is closely supervised by a member of staff, and students are expected to meet with their project supervisor at least fortnightly. Your supervisor will indeed offer guidance and suggestions, but ultimately the responsibility for delivering all aspects of the project falls upon the student alone.

    Career Possiblities

After receiving your MSc in Advanced Computing, you have many career options. A good percentage of University of Bristol Advanced Computing graduates go on to pursue a PhD, either at Bristol or elsewhere. However, this is far from the only course available. Many other graduates take up roles in industry or the commercial world. Others seek out start-ups or venture capitalists to make their own engineering projects into viable businesses.

Ultimately, you have a great deal of control over the course of your study at the University of Bristol, and you should use that to craft a pathway to the career you truly desire. The University may provide the training and facilities, but you truly make your own future.
