    Course Summary

The University of Bristol’s Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Innovation MEng program is designed to prepare students for a career in electrical and electronic engineering, but with a special focus on innovation and the adaptation of new principles and technologies to the world around us.

After completing this program successfully, you will be fully accredited as a Chartered Engineer. More importantly, you will have the skills and understanding you need to ‘engineer’ your own future.

This is a 4-year program in all.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

    Years 1 and 2:

In your first two years of the University of Bristol’s Electrical and Electronic Engineering program, you’ll study all of the ‘core’ skills and techniques required for any engineer. This will include basic and advanced mathematics, both analogue and digital electronics as well as computing systems, electromagnetics, power electronics and control systems, and communications systems of every type.

Most of these courses are the same as required for a BEng, and indeed it is possible to transfer between these 2 courses any time within the first 2 years.

    Years 3 and 4:

In your latter 2 years with the MEng program, you’ll have many opportunities to explore your personal and professional interests with optional modules and units. You will also embark on several personal projects which should serve both to guide and define your specialisation.

    Learning & Teaching

The University of Bristol’s BEng program is an integrated master’s degree, which focuses on group work, individual projects, lectures and extensive mentorship opportunities.

This degree mentions innovation in its name, and indeed this is a strong focus. Both innovation and entrepreneurship are encouraged via many practical session and individual projects throughout your studies. This should prepare you for a career that leads the engineering world, not merely follows it.

    Career Possiblities

After you graduate, you will have the opportunity to capitalise on all of the personal and professional contacts you have made throughout your studies. Not only will you have the degree and accreditation required to assume a role in nearly any major commercial or industrial organisation, you’ll be specially trained to innovate effectively and competitively.

University of Bristol graduates have excellent placement statistics, but many choose to form start-ups immediately after graduation, truly taking their careers and futures into their well-prepared hands. No matter which path you decide to take, you will have the full support of the University of Bristol’s staff and many of its alumni.
