    Course Summary

The University of Bristol’s Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program is fully recognised by the General Medical Council. Students embarking on this course of study will learn the basics and the fine points of modern medicine. When they graduate, they will have everything they need to find a lucrative and personally rewarding position as a junior doctor, in the NHS, privately in the UK, or anywhere else in the world.

Students will experience primary, hospital and community care settings, and will experience nursing care, physiotherapy and pharmacy work first hand. The program also includes an option to study abroad, laying the groundwork for your chosen specialty and future medical career.

This is a 5-year program in all, with an optional intercalation year between the 3rd and 4th years of the program itself.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning & Teaching

The University of Bristol’s Medical School revised their curriculum in 2017. The new program uses a mixture of lectures, small group tutorials, directed discussions, practical exercises and real world clinical experience to prepare young doctors for their careers. You will receive regular feedback on your progress throughout your 5 years of study.

    Career Possiblities

After receiving your degree and finishing the national clinical Foundation Programme (a further 2 years), you may register with the General Medical Council and begin postgraduate training in either primary or secondary care.
