    Course Summary

Biology is an incredibly wide umbrella, covering the study of living things and life processes generally. It includes the study of plants, animals, fungi and the symbiotic groupings which blur the line between these distinctions.

The University of British Columbia’s BSc in Biology includes a strong focus on laboratory and fieldwork skills, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to ‘get your hands dirty’ doing meaningful work within your chosen specialty as well as more generally.   You’ll also learn how to apply computer technology to the field of biology, and to develop the written and oral communication skills that you’ll rely upon in any carer.

This program is delivered primarily at the UBC’s Okanagan campus, which is home to the Life Sciences Centre. This is one of the most advanced life and biomedical sciences research facilities in the country and home to more than 600 trainees and staff working under some 80 faculty investigators.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

In year two you’ll explore evolution, comparative zoology and genetics. In year three you’ll begin to take modules focusing on specific environments, the physiology of cells and how to apply biological principles to large groups. In your final year, you’ll study the most advanced modules UBC has to offer.

    Year 1 Modules Include:

    • Concepts of Biology: An Aboriginal Perspective
    • Evolution and Ecology
    • Human Anatomy and Physiology II
    • Physiology of Multicellular Organisms

    Learning And Teaching

The University of British Columbia’s Biology BSc program is delivered primarily through lectures and seminars, though you will also attend laboratory skills workshops and special events. Some modules may be available as distance learning or blended learning programs.

You’ll have the option of selecting fieldwork modules which can help you build a specialty in the Flora of British Columbia, Field Ornithology, Limnology or something more in line with your own career goals.

    Career Possibilities

This degree will prepare you for almost any graduate level work you can imagine, whether that be in Biochemistry, Environmental Assessment, Food Production, the Health Sciences or the Biomedical Sciences more broadly. You could also enter a Pharmacy, Dental, Medical or Law training program.

Recent graduates have gone on to build exciting and lucrative careers for themselves in fields like neuroscience, Ecology, Molecular Genetics and either Human or Veterinary Medicine.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a 4 year BSc degree.

Applicants must typically have completed a university preparatory program at a senior secondary school, or the international equivalent. Great weight will be given to the GPA earned by your final year.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
