    Course Summary

The University of Buckingham’s MA degree program in Security, Intelligence and Diplomacy is essentially a combination of their Diplomacy MA program and their Security and Intelligence MA program. It was created to better prepare students for a career in government ministries (especially the Foreign Ministry), though it is of interest to anyone planning a career in international journalism, a global civil organisation or in any large international business concern. It will also be of interest to students with no particular intelligence-oriented career goals, but who have a keen interest in the theory and history of the trade.

You’ll learn about how the intelligence and international security environment has changed since the days leading up to the Second World War, about how intelligence and tradecraft are used today, and how to analyse foreign policy issues. You’ll make intensive case studies of great successes and failures in intelligence gathering and of efforts to prevent intelligence from getting out.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning & Teaching

The University of Buckingham’s Security, Intelligence and Diplomacy program uses a range of teaching methods. Every module is fast paced and intensive, yet each is different. Most make use of independent reading and large lecture classes to convey the bulk of the information you’ll need to now. Groups of 4 to 6 students engage in tutorial sessions to get a deeper understanding of the material. You’ll also benefit from easy access to teaching staff.

There are great career possibilities in terms of working for the UK’s foreign office or any of a number of public or private sector organisations which can make good use of your unusual skillset.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a fully accredited MA degree.
