    Course Summary

The University of Buckingham’s MSurg (Master of Surgery) program is an in-depth General Surgery training program at the post graduate level. It was specifically designed to appeal to doctors from overseas who wish to expand their training at a UK university. Tis program closely parallels the Core Surgical Training that the JCST (Joint Committee on Surgical Training) offers, and which forms the basis for later, more specialised surgical training. After all, you have to start somewhere.

You’ll learn in class and in the lab, but most importantly you’ll engage in as many as four separate surgical placements over the two years of the program. These will give you all of the skills the RCSEd says are vital to your early training in the surgical arts. This will put you in an excellent position to pursue a career as a specialist surgeon, by qualifying you to eventually take the appropriate high level training.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This degree program is typically delivered over 2 years at full time.

This is a highly student led program, and you’ll keep your own ePortfolio to identify your won educational needs, set your own learning goals and enable you to engage in personal development through reflective learning as well as other methods.

The curriculum is competency based. That means you’ll know exactly what abilities you’ll be developing throughout the program, and how you’ll go about it. It will also maintain the focus you already have on Good Medical Practice. You’ll never lose sight of the generalist competencies you already have, and upon which you will build throughout the program.

You’ll be closely supervised, of course. Each student will have several supervisors, each with unique and clearly defined roles. These will include the Dean of Postgraduate Medicine, the Pathways to Postgraduate Training in Surgery Director, your University Tutor, your Educational Supervisor and your various Clinical Supervisors.

    Learning & Teaching

The University of Buckingham’s MSurg program will assess you in 10 essential competencies.  These include Assessment and Management of the Surgical Patient, Basic Sciences, Basic Surgical Skills, Care of the Dying Patient, Common Surgical Conditions, Health Promotion, Management of Trauma, Organ Transplantation, Perioperative Care and Surgical Care of the Paediatric Patient. These assessments will involve your ePortfolio, your dissertation, observation of your performance and the Workplace Based Assessment and Annual Review of Competence Progression.

    Career Possiblities

Where you take your career from this point is up to you – the door will be wide open.
