    Course Summary

The University of Central Lancashire’s BSc program in Clinical Dental Technology is unique throughout the UK. It sees students studying both as a dental technician and as a clinical dental technician at the same time. Years 1 and 2 are delivered in the university’s Preston campus, and the remainder in UCLan’s Dental Clinic. At that time you’ll be treating real patients, under supervision.

Clinical dental technicians are increasingly vital members of dental care teams, and dental technology graduates with proven clinical skills have excellent employment prospects in nearly any market. The course is also designed to allow graduates to apply for General Dental Council registry which allows them to take roles as Clinical Dental Technicians. This equips students to seek a career either as a primary care dentist, as a dental technologist, or in a roll bridging both skill sets. BDS and Dental Therapy material is also integrated into the program.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning & Teaching

The University of Central Lancashire requires you to complete 360 credits of modules over a 3 year undergraduate degree. Each standard module accounts for 20 credits, and around 200 hours of in class and individual study. This adds up to some 3,600 hours for a typical degree. Each module is comprised of time spent in lecture classes, smaller seminars, tutorial and skills sessions as well as much independent reading and study.

    Career Possiblities

The University of Central Lancashire has excellent graduate employment figures across the board, with more than 95% of students entering higher degree programs or finding employment within 6 months of graduation. Graduates can register as Dental Care Professionals. Those who attain a 2:1 or better can apply to UCLan’s BDS program via the accelerated entry route, skipping much redundant material. They can then complete their training as practicing dentists.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a full BSc degree.

Students must typically have been awarded at least 3 A Levels at BBC or better. The full list of accepted qualifications can be found here.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 7.0 overall with no section lower than 7.0 would qualify, for example.
