    Course Summary

The University of Derby’s BA degree in Business Accounting and Finance is an excellent choice for ambitious, driven students who want to make a name for themselves either in the accounting profession, in management, or in the financial services industry in the UK or abroad.

You’ll study key accounting and finance skills, but also gain a thorough understanding of strategy, leadership and the governance of business organisations. You’ll gain hands-on experience at financial and trading operations at the university’s brand new Bloomberg Financial Markets Lab, becoming familiar with the technology that has become the industry standard all over the world. You’ll also qualify for several CIMA exemptions.

This program incorporates a foundation year, making it a 4 year pathway to a ‘3 year’ degree. The foundation year makes it approachable for students who would not otherwise have the qualifications to enter a BA program directly, or who were awarded A Levels in completely unrelated subjects.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning & Teaching

Assessment of your progress varies between the ‘main’ program and the foundation year. Foundation level assessments depend primarily on coursework, as well as a few tests to be delivered in class. The next segment of the program uses a flexible assessment regime which includes computer-based systems which give immediate feedback. At higher levels, you will also submit essays ad reports to track your progress. At the highest levels, you will be primarily assessed via examinations.

    Career Possiblities

This industry demands more highly trained professionals than UK universities can easily supply every year, so employment rates for graduates are high. The University of Derby is committed to helping you achieve your desired career, and indeed some 96% of graduates find a position within 6 months.

Recent graduates of this program have become Management Accountants, Finance Managers, Finance Analysts, Credit Controllers, Compliance Managers and Accountants, as well as many other related roles.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 3 year BA degree.

Applicants must typically have achieved at least 72 UCAS Tariff Points, or the international equivalent. Beyond that, a wide range of qualifications are accepted.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An excellent IELTS score would qualify, for example.
