    Course Summary

The University of Derby’s BEng program in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a route into an exciting, rewarding career working at the cutting edge of a wide range of technologies in your choice of dozens of different industries and sectors. The course itself is fully accredited by the IET, and is your first step towards Chartered Engineer status.

You’ll learn a wide range of basic engineering skills before choosing a specialty in electrical and electronic engineering for the Music and Entertainment, Rail, Power Generation and Distribution, Automotive, Avionics, or even Medical Electronics industries.

This program incorporates a foundation year, making it a 4 year pathway to a ‘3 year’ degree. The foundation year makes it approachable for students who would not otherwise have the qualifications to enter a BEng program directly, or who were awarded A Levels in completely unrelated subjects.

In addition, a year’s industrial placement is available to ensure your employability.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning & Teaching

You will have approximately 16 hours of ‘contact time’ with teaching staff each week. Assessment of your progress varies between the ‘main’ program and the foundation year. Foundation level assessments depend primarily on coursework, as well as a few tests to be delivered in class. The next segment of the program uses a flexible assessment regime which includes computer-based systems which give immediate feedback, essays and reports to track your progress and of course examinations.

    Career Possiblities

This industry demands more highly trained professionals than UK universities can easily supply every year, so employment rates for graduates are high. The University of Derby is committed to helping you achieve your desired career, and indeed some 96% of graduates find a position within 6 months.

Recent graduates of this program have taken roles as Embedded Systems Engineers, Industrial Process Managers, and as designers, installers or servicers of a wide range of electrical and electronic systems.

    Entry Credit

Successful completion will result in a 3 year BEng degree.

Applicants must typically have achieved at least 72 UCAS Tariff Points, or the international equivalent. Beyond that, a wide range of qualifications are accepted.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An excellent IELTS score would qualify, for example.
