    Course Summary

This course can be taken as either an MA or a BSc in Economic Studies. No matter what degree path you take, the first two years will be essentially identical. You will have to choose your degree pathway before you begin year three, as they diverge sharply after this point.

If taken as a BSc, you will learn a great deal about mathematics and the scientific side of this discipline. As an MA student, you will instead focus more on how the social sciences and the arts influence economic considerations.

You can choose a mainstream Economics degree, or you can choose to specialise in Business Economics with Marketing or Financial Economics. Lastly, you may choose an Honours degree combining both specialisations and extra content from the social sciences and the arts.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

    Year 1:

No matter what your ultimate specialisation, in year 1 you’ll take two core modules on the essentials of economic theory and today’s economic issues. You’ll also select 2 electives from the Economics list and 2 chosen more broadly.

    Year 2:

Here you’ll study Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. You’ll begin to learn about statistics in an economic context as well. All students will choose 4 more electives according to their interests and career ambitions.

    Year 3:

All year 3 students will study economic analysis, macroeconomics and microeconomics.

    • Those who focus on economics generally will take a module on Econometrics.
    • Finance specialists will instead look more closely at Financial Institutions.
    • Business and marketing specialists will study marketing in the economic context.

    Year 4:

Year 4 will be highly specialised, with little overlap between the degree paths. You may study economic theory and policy, international finance or marketing research, depending on your pathway.

    Learning & Teaching

Dundee’s Economic Studies program is taught initially through interactive tutorials and large lecture classes. In the latter years of both degree pathways, though, you’ll see progressively more computer-based laboratory sessions and skills workshops. Depending on your choice of degree, there may also be an in-depth dissertation in year 4.

    Career Possiblities

The University of Dundee’s Economic Studies degrees prepare graduates to work as professional economists. Some have taken government posts, others are working in finance, management or banking, and still others are working as consultants. As economists are among the most highly paid graduates in the UK, almost any such position is likely to be very rewarding.

    Entry Credit

Entry Requirements for UK and EU-nationals

Dundee’s Economic Studies BSc / MA program typically requires applicants to have three A Levels at BBB or higher in appropriate subjects. SQA Highers and several other equivalent awards also qualify.

Entry Requirements for overseas (non-EU) students

International students must be fluent in written and spoken English. This can be demonstrated by an IELTS score of 6.0 or better overall, with no less than 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 or better in all other sections.

International students must also have earned a degree that is the rough equivalent of that required for UK and EU students. The requirements can be found here.
