The University of East Anglia’s Biological Sciences BSc (with Industrial Placement) is a fantastic way to learn from researchers on the cutting edges of many specialisations of Biological Science, and to give yourself the skills you need to begin a very rewarding career in any of several rapidly growing industries.

This degree program includes a year in industrial placement. Not only does this allow you to develop vital (and highly marketable) real world working experience, it comes with a not insubstantial pay packet. It is also an excellent opportunity to build industry contacts, which could be vital to your later career.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This is a 4 year program for most students, including your year in placement.

    Year 1:

Your first year in the University of East Anglia’s Biological Sciences BSc program will be spent studying a set of core modules. These will give you a rock-solid basis in the sciences generally, and allow you to make informed decisions about your eventual specialisation.

    Year 2:

You will now have access to a wide range of elective modules. Choose wisely, as these will begin to define your area (or areas) of specialisation. In fact, they can determine a great many things about your later career.

    Year 3 (Placement):

Your third year will be spent in an arranged, paid placement in an appropriate company either in the UK or abroad. UEA has a wide network of industry contacts and alumni, and will help you to find a placement that suits your intellectual and career needs very well.

    Year 4:

In your final year, you will focus on specific biological issues which relate to your chosen specialisation. You will also be responsible for delivering an independent research project, under the guidance and supervision of the academic staff.

    Learning & Teaching

The UEA teaches Biological Sciences using lecture classes, smaller seminars and highly focused laboratory exercises to convey the kind of expertise you’ll need to thrive in this exciting field. You will have the opportunity to attend a wide range of guest lectures from world leading researchers, but will have plenty of time for individual study as well.

    Career Possiblities

Many UEA Biological Sciences graduates find positions in advanced academic programs (MSc, PhD, etc.), teaching, science-media, conservation or environmental assessment, forensic sciences, medicine and pharmaceuticals, or the food and beverage industries. However, your new skills will be in high demand nearly anywhere.
