    Course Summary

The University of East Anglia’s Engineering BSc (with Industrial Placement) is a way to give yourself the academic theory, real world working skills and incredible versatility that employers in dozens of rapidly expanding industries demand. It is an intensely integrated learning experience, which will give you the skills you need to operate within or even lead the multidisciplinary teams that are the future of so many industries.

This degree program includes a year in industrial placement. Not only does this allow you to develop vital (and highly marketable) real world industrial experience, it comes with a not insubstantial pay packet. It is also an excellent opportunity to build commercial and industry contacts, which could be vital to your later career.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This is a 4 year program for most students, including your year in placement.

    Year 1:

Your first year in the University of East Anglia’s BEng program will be spent studying 100 credits from a set of core modules as well as 20 credits of electives. Your core curriculum will ensure you have the mathematics and engineering principles you need to thrive, and your electives will begin to define your specialisation(s).

    Year 2:

Again, you’ll have 100 credits of required modules and 20 credits from electives. Your core classes will cover Analogue and Digital Electronics and Dynamics and Vibration, as well as more advanced mathematical and engineering principles.

    Year 3 (Placement):

Your third year will be spent in an arranged, paid placement in an appropriate company either in the UK or abroad. UEA has a wide network of industry contacts and alumni, and will help you to find a placement that suits your intellectual and career needs very well.

    Year 4:

In your final year you’ll have 80 credits of core modules and 40 from electives, which will allow you to put the finishing touches on your areas of special interest.

    Learning & Teaching

The UEA teaches Engineering using lecture classes, smaller seminars and highly focused laboratory exercises to convey the kind of expertise you’ll need to thrive in this exciting field. Typically you’ll be asked to apply what you’ve learned to a specific research or design problem, to reinforce this learning on a practical level.

    Career Possiblities

Many UEA Engineering graduates find positions in advanced academic programs (MSc, PhD, etc.), teaching, the energy industry, manufacturing, or working as an engineer in a wide range of public and private sector contexts. Others have turned the readily transferrable skills they’ve learned into careers in accountancy, finance or law.
