    Course Summary

The University of Edinburgh’s Banking and Risk Master’s degree program is an excellent way to prepare yourself for a management career in a bank or other financial institution, either in the UK or almost anywhere in the world.

There has never been a stronger emphasis on ensuring that banks and similar financial organisations are well-managed by highly trained specialists. In order to ensure that they can produce the kind of banking graduates the industry demands, the University of Edinburgh has put together this highly multidisciplinary, industry-focused degree program. It gives students vital experience performing financial, risk and asset management within a banking context.

Much of the program involves the research output of the CRC (Credit Research Centre) of Edinburgh’s Business School. Instead of looking at banking in the abstract, theoretical perspective this program instead focuses on the kinds of decisions bank Managers really make on a day to day basis, and on understanding how to make them correctly. It aims to give students the specific skills they need to excel in managing risk.

    Course Outline

This course is typically delivered over three terms in a single year.

    Term 1:

During your first term in the Banking and Risk program, you’ll study a core curriculum that has been developed to give you the foundation in mathematics, finance and business principles that you’ll need to excel at higher level modules in later terms.

    Term 2:

Your second term will be more given over to elective modules. These will allow you to differentiate your own degree program from others, and to build skills in your chosen specialty.

    Term 3:

Term 3 will be dedicated to your dissertation. The parameters for this will be arranged with academic staff beforehand, and should have been the focus of much of your Term 2 work.

    Learning & Teaching

By the end of this course, you should be able to use what you’ve learned to understand the roles of different types of banks in different markets and economies, to analyse financial statements, and to create accurate, helpful risk models in real-world conditions.

The University of Edinburgh uses fairly standard teaching techniques to achieve this. These include lectures, reading assignments, in-class discussions and exercises, case studies, problem solving tutorials, and group assignments.

    Career Possiblities
