    Course Summary

The University of Edinburgh’s combined Bachelors and Masters in Engineering degree is not a degree program in Engineering generally, but rather a kind of place-holder for students of Engineering who have not yet decided on their chosen specialty.

This allows students to begin with the core curriculum which is identical for all of Edinburgh’s BEng/MEng programs for their first term. It gives them a bit of experience with the concepts and problems each specialty deals with, and lets them defer their choice of specialisation until the beginning of their second term.

The specialties currently available for transfer from the general BEng/MEng program include the educational base required to become a CEng – a Chartered Engineer – or to become an IEng – an Incorporated Engineer.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This course is typically delivered over four or five years.

    Year 1:

Your first term of your first year will be dedicated to core curriculum classes which will apply to every specialty on offer. Most of these with be mathematics and lower level engineering. Before moving on to the second term, you will have to declare a specialty, and begin selecting modules appropriate to that choice.

    Year 2:

You will study more mathematics in year 2, as well as sciences and other subjects supportive of your specialisation. You will begin to understand how to analyse and solve basic engineering problems.

    Year 3:

Year 3 will focus on your specialty exclusively. You will also have to decide whether to end your studies after year 4 (with a BEng degree) or to go on to a 5th year and a MEng degree.

    Year 4:

Much of your 4th year will be dedicated to design projects, both on an individual and group basis. You will also take high level modules in your chosen specialty.

    Year 5:

This will vary substantially from specialty to specialty.

    Learning & Teaching

The University of Edinburgh’s Engineering programs rely on a range of learning and teaching methods. These of course include lecture classes, smaller tutorials, practical lab sessions, group work and individual projects. You will also engage in quite a bit of individual reading and study. You will be assessed via examinations and course work.

    Career Possiblities

The University of Edinburgh’s BEng/MEng program will prepare you to practice at a high level in one of several specialist engineering fields. You will have both a broad core engineering knowledge and the analysis, design and communication skills you need to join a multidisciplinary team or to go into management or another leadership post.
