    Course Summary

The University of Essex’s Computer Systems Engineering BEng degree program gives you a solid grounding in Computer Science, and then moves into a specialty in Systems Engineering. This three year BEng degree will see you gaining experience with coding for embedded microprocessor systems and the important elements of today’s operating systems. You’ll also gain a familiarity with the hardware on which these systems need to run.

You’ll learn in classrooms, but also in some of the UK’s finest dedicated computer science and engineering labs, and with true experts in their fields. More than 2/3 of the University of Essex’s computer science research was ranked as either ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the last Research Excellence Framework.

You may also apply to spend a year in industrial placement and/or a year studying abroad. Either option will give you a great deal of applicable experience no matter where your professional or academic career takes you, and will give you vital industry contacts in an increasingly globalised economy.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    • Team Project Challenge
    • Object-Oriented Programming
    • Network Fundamentals
    • Mathematics for Computing
    • Introduction to Programming
    • Introduction to Databases
    • Fundamentals of Digital Systems
    • Digital Electronic Systems

    Year 2:

    Core

    • Operating Systems
    • C Programming and Embedded Systems

    Elective

    • Web Application Programming
    • Team Project Challenge (CSE)
    • Software Engineering
    • Robotics
    • Digital Systems Design
    • Computer and Data Networks

    Year 3:

    Core

    • Individual Capstone Project Challenge

    Elective

    • Network Security
    • Network Engineering
    • Mobile Robotics
    • Computer Vision
    • Advanced Embedded Systems Design

    Year 4 (optional):

You may apply to take a year in placement or a year abroad. That will make this a 4-year degree, and will give you a great deal of valuable (and marketable) perspective, nomatter which option you take.
