    Course Summary

The Hotel Management BA degree program is delivered by the University of Essex’s Edge Hotel School. The Edge is the first institution of its kind in the UK, a place where you can learn not just the theoretical, abstract concepts of the hospitality industry, but actually put them into practice. At its heart is Wivenhoe House, a working country house hotel providing 4-star service and accommodation to guests all year round.

This three year BA degree will teach you everything you need to know about the hotel and hospitality industry, and give you crucial real-world working experience as part of a hospitality team. This is an intensive course, running 45 weeks per year. New students are accepted every February and every September, so you have a great deal of flexibility as to when you join.

You’ll learn both general management techniques as well as the ins and outs of running a hotel specifically. Each year of the program will see you taking several taught modules and then working at Wivenhoe House. These will be taken in rotation with other students of the program, ensuring that the hotel and the classrooms are fully utilised at all times.

At each stage of the program, you will take on a progressively senior position in the working hospitality team, ensuring that you get well-rounded working experience. You might begin as a Junior Commis Chef or Lounge Waiter, moving up through Conference and Events Planner, Food and Beverage Supervisor, and eventually Duty Manager for Rooms or Kitchen.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.
