    Course Outline

    This course is delivered over 4 years for full time students.

    Year 1

    The first year of Heriot-Watt’s Architectural Engineering BEng program gives you a background in mathematics, history and design specific to architecture and the built environment.

    Year 1 Core Modules:

    • History of the Built Environment
    • Introduction to Design
    • Introduction to the Environment
    • Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists 1 & 2 
    • Mechanics B

    Year 2

    You will study more advanced modules in year 2, and complete your first Design Project.  In addition, you can select 2 modules from a wide range of second year options, including the very highly regarded Constructionarium Course

    Year 3

    Here you’ll study energy, facilities management and the law, as well as learning to look at architecture from a critical perspective.

    Year 4

    Your fourth year has relatively few taught modules, as much of your time will be taken up with your Design Project and your Dissertation.

    The Design Project is collaborative, creating a new building design to fit a client brief. Your Dissertation however, will be a wholly individual effort, with the support of academic staff.

    Learning & Teaching

    The University of Heriot-Watt prefers heavily student-focused learning and teaching methods, and you will experience quite a few different types over this 4 year program. You will complete specific tasks and projects whilst attending frequent tutorials, lectures and seminars. Some modules will also feature library-based or computer-based elements, broadening your skillset accordingly.

    Entry Credit

    Entry Requirements for UK and EU-nationals

    The University of Heriot-Watt typically requires students to have already achieved 3 A Levels at ABC or BBB with a B or better in Mathematics, or an equivalent qualification.

    Entry Requirements for overseas (non-EU) students                         

    International students must be fluent in written and spoken English. This can be demonstrated by a good IELTS score, but other courses will be accepted.

    International students must also have academic accreditation equivalent to that required for UK and EU students.
