    Course Summary

    The University of Manitoba’s MArch degree program is fully certified by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board. The CACB is the only agency authorized by the CALA (Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities) to accredit professional degree programs in architecture for the purposes of architectural licensure in Canada.

    Most of your learning will be in the design studio. You’ll be able to experiment both on paper and tactilely, making both physical and computer models of your designs. However, you’ll also explore many other facilities, such as the FABLab, the CADLab the university’s Workshops, the Architecture and Fine Arts Library and the CAST – the Centre for Architectural Structures Technology. 

    You’ll come to understand how architectural designs can be responsive to the needs of different people, to the demands of different geographies and even the challenges of tectonics. You’ll learn how to design everything from more useful furniture to more sustainable cities, from more humanising interior spaces to buildings which resist natural disasters. 

    If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness.     Course Outline

    You’ll learn everything that the Architecture graduates of today – and most especially of tomorrow – need to know. It will give you the tools and techniques you’ll need to create coherent, sustainable cities, structures and infrastructure in an economically and technologically viable manner. You’ll learn in modern, purpose built facilities in an exciting, interdisciplinary atmosphere.

    You’ll have a wide range of courses to select form, many of which will be optional modules chosen to reflect your interests and intended area of practice. These include not only Architecture modules, but also those of closely related disciplines such as:

    Learning And Teaching

    University of Manitoba relies in many standard teaching methods, including formal lectures, interactive tutorials and skills sessions and seminar style classes. It is also a major research university, and you will have plenty of opportunities to participate in that research tradition first hand, either through your thesis component or arranged research projects. The Architecture MSc program also features plenty of hands-on time modelling designs physically and in simulated digital environments.

    Entry & Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 1-2 year MSc degree.

    Applicants must typically have completed a first Bachelor’s degree or the international equivalent before applying. Minimum admissions standards can be found here. 

    All classes are taught in English unless otherwise noted, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
