    Course Summary

The life sciences are an incredibly diverse field. The study of Biology can incorporate everything from Ecology, Evolution and Biochemistry to Genetics and Molecular Biology. This makes the biological Sciences a very popular subject to study, and one which combines naturally with a wide range of niche or specialty studies.

The University of New Brunswick’s MSc in Biology is delivered by the Biology Graduate Academic Unit of the Biology Department, and is suitable preparation for a PhD degree at UNB or any other fine university. The program is heavily research based, and the development and presentation of an original research project is the cornerstone of the degree.

You will study primarily at the Fredericton campuses, but the faculty also includes a range of adjunct professors and research associates from outside research facilities, each of whom can co-supervise graduate students whose academic and research goals match their specialties.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning And Teaching

University of New Brunswick relies on many standard teaching methods to convey the content above. These typically include large formal lectures, interactive tutorials and skills sessions as well as seminar style classes. As UNB is a major research university, you will be able to contribute to these programs as you study.

The MSc in Biology program in particular includes laboratory and field skills sessions and a grounding in many important research and analysis techniques.

    Career Possibilities

Many UNB Biology MSc graduates have accepted roles as scientific writers, educators, naturalists, research technicians, museum workers, aquarium or zoo workers, park guides, rangers and lab technicians. They tend to find work in nature centres and parks, research institutes, federal and provincial level government organisations, pharmaceutical companies, conservation organisations, hospitals and clinics, veterinary offices and more. Others find rewarding roles in bioinformatics, the food industry, or in a range of not for profit organisations.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a thesis-based MSc degree.

Applicants must typically have completed a 4 year degree in a related field, or the international equivalent. If you do not meet the requirements, a qualifying year may be possible.
