    Course Summary

The University of Ottawa’s MCS program in Computer Science is much more than just a continuation of their Computer Science BSc program. It accepts students form many backgrounds including electrical engineering, and serves as a stepping stone to the PhD program in Computer Science.

You’ll learn to practice the Computer Scientist’s art – developing and improving software systems which can analyse, store and organise information. You’ll find new ways to make these systems more scalable, faster and more reliable. You may also refine any specialisation you’ve already developed for yourself, such as Algorithm Design, Distributed Computing, Data Security, Computer Graphics, Artificial Intelligence or Databases, among others.

This program is delivered by the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Computer Science (OCICS), composed of both the EECS faculty at Ottawa and Carleton University’s School of Computer Science.

This program is only offered in English.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning And Teaching

The University of Ottawa’s Master of Computer Science program focuses both on the practical and the academic. It uses every teaching method available, from lecture based classroom instruction to laboratory practice, from the use of state of the art technologies and facilities to diligent academic research techniques. You’ll engage in a Thesis or Graduate Project, conducting your own research in the university’s labs and benefiting from close guidance and mentoring.

    Career Possibilities

An MCS in Computer Science can qualify you for a wide range of different roles. The simple fact is that almost every industry and economic sector demands computer scientists to create the apps and systems they need to thrive. While you might prefer to enter into a PhD program next, whether at U Ottawa or elsewhere, you could also go directly into a career in Business, Industry, Government or even Entertainment, depending on your specialisation and interests.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a 2 year MCS degree.

To apply you’ll need to have a Honours Baccalaureate degree which includes computer science, or the international equivalent. Other qualifications may be accepted.
