    Course Outline

    This degree program is typically delivered over 2 years at full time. This results in a full Post-graduate Diploma in Surgical Care Practice. It can, however, be taken as a Post-graduate Certificate (PgCert) in Surgical Care Practice in a single year.

    Year 1

    You’ll explore the material necessary to develop your skills as a specialist, and indeed to become a leader in surgical patient care in any surgical team. You’ll learn to collect and analyse patient data, and to make decisions with the appropriate degree of clinical reasoning and good judgement.

    Core Modules Include:

    • Research Methodology and Application
    • Core Competencies for Surgical Care Practice

    Year 2

    In the last year of this 2 year program, you’ll develop the skill levels appropriate to Band 7 remuneration, and can seek a position where you’ll be able to decisions based on high level patient interactions.

    • Advanced Assessment for Clinical Practice
    • Surgical Care Specialist Practice (Abdominal, Pelvic and General Surgery)

    Learning And Teaching

    Each of the 2 years of this program begins with 8 weeks of intensive taught modules which convey the complex theories behind the latest surgical techniques. The taught portion is followed immediately by a 28 week clinical practice period which will see you gaining real world experience in putting those theories into practice. In this manner, you’ll learn the clinical skills you need to meet all national industry standards for your role.

    Your curriculum will include a great many employability skills sessions as the default but you’ll also have access to a range of sessions delivered by the university which can make you much more attractive to potential employers.     Entry & Credit

    Successful completion will result in a 1 year PgCert or a 2 year PgDip.

    Applicants must typically have earned a 2:2 honours undergraduate degree or the international equivalent, as well as work experience as a Surgical Care Practitioner Trainee. The full list of qualifications can be found here.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test. An IELTS score of 6.5 overall and no less than 5.5 in any one section would qualify, for example.
