    Course Summary

The University of Prince Edward Island’s BSc degree in Actuarial Science is delivered by the School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences, one of the best respected institutions in the province. However, you needn’t rely on the school’s reputation to ensure yourself of a thriving, lucrative career. The unemployment rate for trained actuaries is literally 0% throughout Canada, and a similar demand applies throughout North America and many other parts of the world as well. Actuaries generally earn around $CAN100,000 per year at mid-career!

The degree program includes co-operative educational opportunities which can be the key to landing the best roles right after graduation. Co-op programs give you real world working skills and assure employers that you have more than an academic knowledge of your field. It typically consists of 3 14 week work terms and 3 professional courses. You can apply to the Co-Op Education Program at any time after completing your first year of study.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

Like almost all of UPEI’s degree programs, this one is delivered primarily through lectures, skill-based workshops and interactive seminar sessions. Though it is designed as a full-time, on-campus program, some modules may be available as distance learning or blended learning formats.

A wide range of co-op education options are available as well, which can see you alternating between on-campus academic terms and on-site work terms within your field of specialty.

This degree is an excellent way to begin a career as an actuary, but it will also open up a wide range of roles in other business and non-business contexts. Recent graduates of the program have become actuaries, accountants, entrepreneurs, consultants and more, working in the private, public and not for profit sectors.

Alternatively, many students continue their education at the Graduate and eventually PhD levels. Many fellowships are available to help finance your graduate school career.
