    Course Summary

    The University of Prince Edward Island’s Master of Global Affairs degree program is designed to give you all of the skill, insight and cultural understanding you need to build a career in this exciting, travel-filled and vitally necessary field. 

    You’ll learn in a well equipped, multidisciplinary facility under the supervision of some of the best staff in the world. You’ll learn directly from practicing policy makers, jurists in international courts, leaders of NGOs and similar bodies, and other experts in the field. 

    This program is offered in partnership with the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid. The URJC is a recognised global leader in this field, and has decades of experience preparing bright young professionals for careers in solving some of the most pressing social, economic and other problems facing the people of the world. The first 4 months of the program are delivered at UPEI, and the remaining 8 months at URJC Madrid. 

    If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness.     Course Outline

    This degree program is typically delivered over a single year of full time study, in Canada and in Madrid.  

    Modules Include:

    • Comparative Human Rights of the Americas 

    This module explores how the concept of human rights has evolved in the Western Hemisphere.

    • Comparative Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples of the Americas

    Here you’ll explore the human rights issues faced by native populations of North, South and Central America.

    • Globalization and International Organizations: Economic, Legal, and Policy Challenges 

    Here you’ll see how different nations’ international policies interact. 

    • Food, Health, and Human Security

    Here you’ll look at challenges to human happiness and security all over the world.

    • International Climate Change Diplomacy 

    Here you’ll look at the response to global climate change on the policy level.

    If you are allowed to enter the program without a suitable Honours degree at the Baccalaureate level, you will have to take suitable undergraduate classes to make up for the lack. 

    Learning And Teaching

    Like almost all of UPEI’s degree programs, this one is delivered primarily through lectures, skill-based workshops and interactive seminar sessions. As this is both a practical and theoretical program, you can expect to spend a great deal of time in the business simulations and in-depth research projects. You’ll also experience a completely different but equally effective and complete learning and teaching style in your one to two terms in Madrid. 

    Career Possibilities

    This degree could open the door to a prestigious career in refugee rights, minority protection, policy development, diplomacy the law or international relations. Alternatively, many students continue their education at the PhD level. Many fellowships and scholarships are available to help finance your doctoral school career. 

    Recent graduates have, naturally, found roles which require the kind of diplomatic, policy creation and strategic policy application skills you can only learn at UPEI and URJC.

    Entry & Credit

    Successful completion will result in a Master’s degree in Global Affairs

    Applicants must typically have earned an undergraduate degree form a recognised institution, or the international equivalent. Two letters of recommendation will also be required.

    All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test such as the IELTS.
