    Course Summary

The University of Prince Edward Island’s MSc program offers 4 separate degrees, each outlined below:

    • Master of Science specialising in Sustainable Design Engineering (SDE)

This specialisation includes all aspects of designing and engineering more efficient, more sustainable and more ecologically friendly materials, structures and devices. It considers both environmental an economic sustainability, and can be the foundation of an exciting career in green design.

    • Master of Science specialising in Human Biology (HB)

A specialisation in Human Biology is an excellent follow-on for a BSc in Biology, and can lead to exciting research careers at the forefront of the field.

    • Master of Science specialising in Environmental Sciences (ESC)

Environmental Science specialists study the world around us, how people, plants and animals interact with it, and how it is changing due to both human and natural causes.

    • Master of Science specialising in Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences (MMS)

MMS specialists create and study new molecules and substances, both organic and inorganic.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This degree program is typically delivered over 2 years of full time study. You’ll have to choose one of the specialisations above.

Though the exact schedule of courses is highly flexible, there are certain minimum standards. You will need to take at least three graduate level modules, for example, which must be selected from the university’s ‘substantive’ options. You’ll have to take a seminar course in your chosen specialisation as well. You are allowed to select only one Directed Studies course for credit, but more can be taken uncredited (fees will still apply). You must also register for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training during your first year in the program. This course will be non-credited.

If you are allowed to enter the program without a suitable Honours degree at the Baccalaureate level, you will have to take suitable undergraduate classes to make up for the lack. Courses may be audited as well.

    Learning And Teaching

Like almost all of UPEI’s degree programs, this one is delivered primarily through lectures, skill-based workshops and interactive seminar sessions. As this is both a practical and theoretical program, you can expect to spend a great deal of time in the lab and possibly the field, depending on your chosen specialty. You’ll do a great deal of research as well, with the guidance and support of the instructors and other faculty.

    Career Possibilities

This degree is an excellent way to begin a career in a wide range of roles in the research, industrial or commercial applications of your chosen specialty. Alternatively, many students continue their education at the PhD level. Many fellowships and scholarships are available to help finance your doctoral school career.

Recent graduates have, naturally, found roles involving Molecular and Macromolecular Science, Environmental Science, Human Biology and / or Sustainable Design Engineering.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in an MSc degree specialising in SDE, HB, ESC or MMS.

Applicants must typically have earned an Honours BSc degree in an appropriate field, or the international equivalent.

All classes are taught in English, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test such as the IELTS.
