    Course Summary

The University of Victoria’s Counselling Psychology MA programs are excellent choices for those who have a passion for helping people to explore themselves and overcome their personal problems. Trained, professional counsellors are needed to apply modern psychological theory and advanced patient management skills in a wide range of clinical and community contexts.

This program is offered in two different versions.

    • First is the Indigenous Communities Counselling Program, which focuses on giving you both the tools of a modern counselling psychologist and a deep understanding of the values and traditions of various Indigenous peoples.
    • Next is the traditional Counselling Psychology Program, which can be taken either as a project based or thesis based Master’s degree. Either option is fully accredited by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association’s Council on Accreditation of Counsellor Education Programs.

This program also has a practicum requirement, where you will learn first-hand how to work in a variety of settings.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    • The project based pathway is considered a terminal degree of a professional nature, like one in medicine or the law. It prepares you to practice in your specialisation on that level.
    • Alternatively, the thesis-based program is seen as preparatory to a range of PhD programs offered at UVic and many other fine schools.
