    Course Summary

The University of Victoria’s MA program in Cultural, Social and Political Thought is a highly interdisciplinary program delivered by the Departments of Anthropology, English, Environmental Studies, History, Political Science, and Sociology. The university’s staff work together to give students exposure to the latest thinking and issues of our time, and a deeper understanding of the factors that cause these issues.

As a part of a small cohort of other master’s level students you’ll learn to discuss these issues productively, and to critique them in an intellectually rigorous manner. You’ll learn to apply critical theory to a wide range of contemporary cultural, political and social issues. This study will be highly theoretical, and will have little ‘grounding’ in case studies or practical application.

The student body for this course is highly international, often including representatives from the US, Iran, Germany, Brazil and many other nations besides.

Note that this program is also available as a PhD.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

It is thesis-based, and the topic of the thesis must meet not only the requirements of their home department and degree program but those of the CSPT program as well.

Typical modules of the CSPT program include:

    • Contemporary Cultural Social and Political Thought I

Relating current events to the CSPT thoughts of the 20th and 21st centuries

    • Topics in Cultural, Social and Political Thought

This seminar looks at issues such as global order and a wide range of political and cultural modes and seeks to relate them in terms of social theory, language and tradition.

    • Directed Readings in CSPT

Here you will study individually under a member of the CSPT faculty looking at specific topics relevant to the field.
