    Course Summary

Western University’s BSc program in Biology is delivered by its famed Biology Department. Biology is of course the core of the Life Sciences, and many a great doctor, biochemist, geneticist or naturalist began their academic career with an undergraduate degree in Biology. There are a staggering number of specialisations open to you after completing your degree, and you can prepare yourself for any (or several) of them by selecting optional courses in the latter years of your undergraduate degree. In fact, the Biology department at Western University offers more than 70 courses for you to choose from.

You’ll work to develop your communications and critical thinking abilities, and come to appreciate the finer points of both experimental design and data analysis. Depending on your choice of subjects, you might also learn about ecosystem assessment and preservation, flora and fauna identification and classification, molecular biology, practical microscopy or a wide range of other laboratory skills that a professional biologist will need to command.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Course Outline

This degree program is typically delivered over 4 years of full time study.

You’ll have your choice of several different degree pathways. Some students remain a generalist, taking core classes as well as a sampling of basic content form nearly every sub-field of biology. Others take up a specific focus, and prepare themselves either for a public or private sector role in that sub-field or for an academic or research career.

You might opt for a specialisation in Biodiversity and Conservation and learn more about the forces that shape the ecosystem, the impact climate change is having on biodiversity or even how to restore struggling ecosystems.

You might focus on Animal Behaviour, studying the biological bases for cognition, social organisation and communication.

You might focus more on Genetics, learning how the blueprints of life are passed down on a biomolecular level and how they can be changed, either spontaneously or deliberately.

    Learning And Teaching

Western’s Biology and Life Sciences programs have many different learning methods. Of course you’ll take large lecture classes and engage in practical laboratory sessions. You’ll take part in interactive seminars and even smaller tutorial sessions.

In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in a research project in an exotic location, and gain degree credits at the same time. You can take part in the Ontario Universities’ Program in Field Biology offering up to 30 different field courses ever year.

    Career Possibilities

This degree program is designed to give you the academic, fieldwork and laboratory skills that biology-based employers demand as well as the professional network you’ll need to find those roles. Whilst it is not a training program for any particular industry, you’ll gain a wide range of professional skills and a deep understanding of the life sciences generally. Those students who continue on to a master’s level program often look to careers in teaching, law, dentistry or Medicine.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a 4 year BSc degree.

Applicants must typically have graduated from a Canadian or overseas secondary school having taken some biology content, though there are many other options.

All classes are taught in English unless otherwise indicated, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
