    Course Summary

The MSc degree in Chemistry offered by Western University is a great follow-on from a Bachelor’s level degree in Chemistry or any closely related field. It is designed to give you a mastery of the field of chemistry overall, as well as allowing you to specialise in one or more commercially or academically relevant areas. You’ll learn to plan, carry out and analyse research in the lab and in the field, and to adapt standard methodologies to unusual problems.

As a part of this degree you’ll work closely with representatives for many local and regional companies who regularly hire skilled chemistry graduates, including the pharmaceutical industry.

Western University’s MSc programs are heavily research-based, and an excellent route to either working in a professional capacity or pursuing an academic career at the highest level, that of PhD. Western’s Department of Chemistry offers courses at both levels, as well as at the undergraduate level.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning And Teaching

Western’s MSc programs rely upon many different learning methods. Of course you’ll take formal lecture classes and engage in practical and laboratory skills sessions. You’ll take part in interactive seminars and even smaller tutorial sessions.

You’ll also be studying in one of the best research chemistry facilities Canada has to offer. The Department of Chemistry at Western University has been recognised nationally and internationally as both academically excellent and a great place to work.

    Career Possibilities

This degree program is designed to give you the academic and practical skills that a career in a chemistry-related industry demands. Many careers in this field will require a PhD degree, and as a result many recent graduates have taken further training either at Western or elsewhere. Others have gone directly or indirectly into careers in NGOs, the chemical engineering industry, and both public and private research institutions.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a 1 year MSc degree.

Applicants must typically have graduated from a Canadian or overseas 4 year Baccalaureate degree program, though there are many other options.

All classes are taught in English unless otherwise indicated, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
