    Course Summary

Western University’ BEng program in Mechanical Engineering is available to all students who successfully complete the unversity’s first year Engineering program. It begins with a broad overview of the principles of Mechanical Engineering, and then allows you to select form among many highly specialised optional modules in year 3.

It can be taken on its own, or as part of a concurrent degree in Law, Management or Medicine. That content will be delivered by the Faculty of Science, Social Science or Arts and Humanities.

That specialty should be chosen wisely, as it will largely define your early career. Possible areas of special expertise include:

    • Biomechanics
    • Control Systems
    • Manufacturing
    • Materials Science
    • Medical Devices
    • NEMS/MEMS
    • Nuclear Energy
    • Production Management
    • Robotics
    • Thermo-fluids

In addition, you’ll have access to the Engineering Externship Program. This 8 month long program is delivered in partnership with Fanshawe College and will give you vital practical skills in metrology, wending and machining as well as giving you the kind of general technical experience that employers demand.

If you are changing direction after starting in another career area, you will possess valuable work experience and professional awareness. Many employers actively seek candidates with these benefits. Our network of contacts, a dedicated employability service and a reputation in the legal profession mean we also have an outstanding track-record of finding students legal employment. Many employers favour GDL students in an increasingly competitive legal job market. Through studying another degree subject, you will have gained many transferable skills. By taking the conversion route into law, you are showing motivation and determination by choosing law at a later stage than some others. This looks good to employers.

    Learning And Teaching

Western’s BEng programs have many different learning methods. You’ll focus on contemporary design practices, fundamental engineering skills and other technical matters, but you’ll also learn how to interact personally and professionally with professional engineers.

This program includes a capstone-level Mechanical Engineering Design Project which will be delivered to one of the university’s industrial partners. This will help you begin to transfer the theoretical skills you’ve learned into real world practice.

    Career Possibilities

This degree program is designed to give you the technical skills and professional network that you’ll need to build a career as a mechanical engineer. Whilst it is not a training program for any particular industry, you’ll gain a wide range of professional skills and a deep understanding of mechanical engineering generally.

Those students who do not continue on to a master’s level program often look to careers in the Aircraft and Parts Manufacturing, Biomedical Equipment

Design, Power Generation, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning or Motor Vehicle and Parts Manufacturing industries.

    Entry & Credit

Successful completion will result in a 4 year BEng degree.

Applicants must typically have completed their first year engineering content successfully to apply. First year admission can be based on graduation from a Canadian or overseas secondary school or a range of other options.

All classes are taught in English unless otherwise indicated, and international students will be required to show proficiency in English by scoring well on an approved test.
