Course Summary
Cultural Studies is a wide ranging field by its very nature, and one which seeks to draw lessons from disciplines as widely separated as the humanities, the social sciences and the ‘hard’ sciences.
Cultural studies looks at how cultures form, what they ‘produce’, and how they are seen, both from within and from without. It asks questions like:
- How are power, wealth, privilege and authority distributed among groups and individuals within a culture?
- What causes some cultural symbols, artefacts, texts and items to be considered more significant or holy than others?
- What defines ‘culture’ and what are an individual culture’s limits?
The University of Winnipeg relies on a fairly interdisciplinary approach for all of its Master of Arts degrees, and this one is no exception. You can find more detailed information about the research interests of all the university’s professors on the web pages of its various departments and faculties.
